What to expect

The entire rehabilitation process begins with understanding your individual needs. During the session, your physiotherapist will assess your movement patterns, discuss your symptoms and rehabilitation goals with you, and provide personalized guidance based on your clinical situation.

Depending on your needs, the session may include movement retraining, posture and balance exercises, coordination training, body awareness techniques, functional movement strategies, and recommendations for home practice to help you continue your rehabilitation process between sessions.

As your rehabilitation progresses, your treatment plan will be adapted to reflect your progress and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnosis before booking?

Before starting physiotherapy treatment, we recommend that you have a diagnosis made by a qualified medical professional. If you have questions about your diagnosis or whether our services are suitable for you, you can start by booking a 30-minute Initial Session.

What types of dystonia do you treat?

We support patients with different types of dystonia, including cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, hand dystonia, leg/foot dystonia, oromandibular dystonia, and facial dystonia.

If you are unsure whether we can help you, we recommend booking a 30-minute Initial Session.

What happens during an online physiotherapy session?

Your physiotherapist will assess your individual movement patterns, symptoms, functional difficulties, and rehabilitation goals.

Depending on your needs, the session may include movement observation, therapeutic exercises, movement retraining, sensory and body awareness work, breathing or relaxation strategies, and guidance to help you continue your rehabilitation between sessions.

Is the treatment personalized according to my symptoms and needs?

Yes. Dystonia affects each person differently. Your physiotherapist will adapt the assessment and rehabilitation approach to your symptoms, movement patterns, functional needs, and individual goals.

Exercises and movement strategies may be adjusted as your rehabilitation progresses.

How long does each session last?

Individual online physiotherapy sessions last approximately 60 minutes.

Do I need a medical referral?

In general, a medical referral is not required to book a physiotherapy session. However, depending on your circumstances, diagnosis, country of residence, or needs identified during the assessment, the physiotherapist may recommend that you consult your doctor, neurologist, or another healthcare professional.

Can I book a consultation from another country?

Yes. Dystonia Virtual Clinic offers online physiotherapy sessions to people in different countries.

The ability to provide telerehabilitation services may be subject to the professional and regulatory requirements applicable in the country or jurisdiction where the person is located at the time of the session.

If there are any limitations affecting the provision of the service in your location, you will be informed.

Are online physiotherapy sessions considered telerehabilitation?

Yes. Individual physiotherapy sessions delivered by video consultation are a form of telerehabilitation, in which the physiotherapist provides professional care and guidance remotely using secure communication technologies.

What technology do I need?

You will need a computer, tablet, or mobile phone with a camera and microphone, as well as a stable Internet connection.

We recommend using a device with a screen large enough to see the physiotherapist clearly and that can be positioned so that your physiotherapist can observe you properly when it is necessary to assess your movements.

Before the session, check that your camera, microphone, and Internet connection are working correctly.

How much space do I need for the session?

You will need a quiet and safe space with enough room to move comfortably.

Your physiotherapist may ask you to sit, stand, walk, or perform simple movements during the session. Remove any obstacles that could present a fall risk and position your device so that the physiotherapist can observe your movements when necessary.

What should I wear?

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. During the session, your physiotherapist may ask you to stand, walk, or perform gentle movements.

What happens if my physiotherapist considers that online physiotherapy is not suitable for me?

Your physiotherapist will assess whether your needs can be addressed appropriately and safely through online care.

If they consider that an in-person assessment, medical evaluation, or another type of care would be more appropriate, they will discuss this with you and recommend the most suitable next steps.

What happens if I have technical problems during the session?

If you experience problems with your Internet connection, camera, or audio, try reconnecting using the same consultation link.

We will do everything reasonably possible to restore the connection and continue the session. If a significant technical issue prevents the consultation from taking place, your physiotherapist will discuss the most appropriate next steps with you.

What happens if I cannot attend or need to cancel a session?

We understand that plans can sometimes change. Individual appointments can be cancelled or rescheduled free of charge, provided that you notify us at least 24 hours in advance.

Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice, or missed without prior cancellation, may be charged in full.

Please refer to our Cancellation and Refund Policy for full details.

Can you provide documentation so I can request reimbursement from my insurance provider?

We can provide documentation relating to the physiotherapy services received and the payments made.

Coverage and reimbursement depend on the terms of your insurer and your policy. Dystonia Virtual Clinic cannot guarantee that an insurance company will reimburse all or part of the cost of treatment.

We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly before booking if you intend to request reimbursement.

Are physiotherapy sessions recorded?

No. Physiotherapy sessions are not recorded. Recording the sessions, either in full or in part, by any means or device is not permitted under any circumstances.
